PSE&G issued the following statement from Karen Reif, Vice President of Renewables and Energy Solutions in response to today’s executive order from President Biden calling for half of the new car sales to be of electric vehicles by the end of the decade.

The Biden administration’s target that 50% of vehicles sold in the United States be electric vehicles by 2030 is welcome news. Electrifying the transportation sector is fundamental to achieving our state and national climate goals. Achieving the administration’s target will be a paradigm shift, contingent on building out the EV charging network to combat “range anxiety” by increasing the number of charging locations across New Jersey, making it more convenient for drivers to plug in their vehicles. Utilities like PSE&G are poised to accelerate EV adoption across a broad range of customers. We are busy doing the “make-ready work” to prepare homes, publicly accessible parking lots, and other sites for EV charging.

We are ready and willing to do more. We look forward to working with the Biden Administration on implementing this goal and other efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change.

Support for voting rights

At the core of our democracy is the right to vote. It stands for the notion that each of us has the right to voice our opinion, to have a say in our future and take part in this grand American experiment. Since our inception, the United States has struggled to deliver the right to vote to all of its citizens equally, but much progress, thanks to the suffragettes, the civil rights movement and countless others who stood up to inequality, has been made.

Here in New Jersey, we are encouraged by the steps our elected leaders recently took to expand access to voting, offering more options for early voting so all people, with varying work schedules, personal commitments and economic situations, have greater opportunities to exercise their right.

At PSEG, we strive to develop an inclusive workplace culture in which every employee feels welcome, respected and safe. We understand that diversity is a strength, and that voices from different backgrounds, cultures and economic circumstances are key to our ability to solve problems for the communities we serve.

Voting is a sacred right and one many of us take for granted. As a country, we have come a long way in delivering access of the vote to all, but there is still a long way to go. Amplifying the voices of all who want to and are eligible to vote should be the cornerstone of our electoral systems – for the good of all of us and our country.

Support for President Biden’s offshore wind commitment

“Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time and the development of the offshore wind industry is an essential part of the solution. PSEG applauds the Biden Administration’s ambitious commitment to developing and investing in this industry, bringing with it new skills, jobs and carbon-free energy. We look forward to working with partners across the public and private sector to advance this critical effort. – Ralph Izzo, PSEG Chairman, President and CEO

Support for S. 4897, the “American Nuclear Infrastructure Act of 2020”

“Preserving existing nuclear generation is critical to decarbonizing the electric sector and the economy as a whole. Nuclear energy supplies more than 90% of New Jersey’s carbon-free electricity and contributes $1.2B to the state’s GDP. Senator Booker has been a leader in Washington on the critical role of nuclear energy in achieving our climate goals and ensuring the resilience of our electric supply. Many of the nation’s nuclear plants are facing real financial distress, including those in New Jersey.

“We applaud the bipartisan effort from Senators Booker and Barrasso, recognizing that safe, productive nuclear plants must be economically preserved. As we aim to tackle climate change and move toward a carbon-free economy, we look forward to continuing to engage with them on this important topic.” – Ralph Izzo, PSEG Chairman, President and CEO

Salute to the suffrage movement and 19th Amendment

On Aug. 26, we joined the nation in celebrating the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote. We salute not only those women who led this historic fight a century ago, but also those who continue to fight today for equal rights and opportunity for all. “As a member of the PSEG organization, it’s my privilege to work alongside so many talented women.” – Ralph Izzo, PSEG Chairman, President and CEO

Supporting the African American community through Powering Equity and Social Justice Initiative

PSEG and the PSEG Foundation are committing $1 million to our new Powering Equity and Social Justice initiative, which provides philanthropic support to organizations that foster changes, such as confronting systemic racism or advancing social and economic equity for people of color. When any part of our communities is hurting, we all hurt. PSEG recognizes that when we witness prejudice, injustice, or hate, it’s vital that we join together to take action and to continue to make a difference in the lives of our employees, our customers, and the communities we share.
