Who is PJM?

PJM Interconnection is a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of 13 states, including Maryland, and the District of Columbia. PJM, one of many RTOs throughout the United States, is an independent organization authorized by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. One of PJM’s primary jobs is to ensure that the electric grid remains safe, reliable and secure.

Planning for the future needs of the regional electric system is an integral part of PJM’s role. PJM regularly identifies what upgrades to the regional transmission grid are needed to ensure reliability, or the uninterrupted flow of electricity at all times.

When needs are identified, PJM opens a competitive process to find regulated transmission solutions and selects a utility to build that solution. The award of MPRP to PSEG is one of several solutions that PJM has identified to help ensure long-term reliability in Maryland.
